Effects of LED Light Therapy on Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is a naturally occurring process in our bodies, but excessive amounts can be damaging if left unchecked. Apart from everyday fatigue, oxidative stress can promote premature ageing to chronic diseases. Fortunately, there are many methods to prevent oxidative stress from crossing into harmful levels including antioxidants, lifestyle changes, and emerging therapies. One promising approach is LED light therapy, particularly in the red and near-infrared spectrum.

Learn how oxidative stress can be harmful to our bodies and how LED light therapy can help mitigate these effects with our team at Rojo Light Therapy NZ.

What Is Oxidative Stress?

Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and the body's ability to neutralise them.

Our bodies naturally produce free radicals as they convert food into energy. These molecules help support the immune system, defending the body against intruding bacteria and viruses. However, when left uncontrolled, they can also start attacking healthy cells.

Antioxidants prevent this attack by neutralising these free radicals. Similar to free radicals, the body naturally produces antioxidants, but they can also be consumed through foods such as berries, coffee, and dark chocolate.

While both molecules play an important role in immune function and cell signalling, excessive levels can trigger oxidative stress which can cause damage to DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.

What are the harmful effects of oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress is a significant factor in ageing and disease progression. It contributes to the following conditions:

  • Chronic inflammation – Long-term oxidative stress triggers inflammation, which is linked to conditions like arthritis and cardiovascular disease.
  • Neurodegeneration – Oxidative damage is associated with disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
  • Metabolic disorders – Conditions such as diabetes are influenced by oxidative stress-induced insulin resistance.
  • Skin ageing and damage – UV exposure accelerates oxidative damage, leading to wrinkles and pigmentation issues.

Although the body has natural antioxidant defences, prolonged exposure to environmental toxins, poor diet, and stress can overwhelm these protective systems, leading to increased oxidative stress which accelerates cellular dysfunction and disease.

How Does LED Light Therapy Affect Oxidative Stress?

LED light therapy, specifically red and near-infrared light, is widely studied for its effects on cellular function. This treatment works through a process called photobiomodulation, where specific wavelengths of light interact with cellular components to trigger biological responses which can help counteract the effects of oxidative stress. Here’s how:

  1. Enhanced mitochondrial function

LED light therapy, especially in the red and near-infrared range, helps cells produce energy more efficiently by supporting mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the parts of the cell responsible for generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which fuels nearly all cellular activities. A key enzyme in this process, cytochrome c oxidase (CCO), absorbs red and near-infrared light, making it work more effectively. This leads to higher ATP production and improved oxygen use in cells.

When mitochondria don’t function properly, they produce too many reactive oxygen species (ROS), a type of free radical. By improving mitochondrial function, LED light therapy allows cells to better manage oxidative stress and minimise its harmful effects.

  1. Regulated ROS levels

Research shows that in healthy cells, red and near-infrared light can briefly raise ROS levels, triggering the body to produce more antioxidants like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase. These antioxidants help neutralise excess ROS and strengthen the body's defence system.

On the other hand, if oxidative stress is already too high, LED therapy appears to lower ROS production, preventing further damage.

  1. Reduced inflammation and protected tissues

Oxidative stress and inflammation go hand in hand. When cells experience too much oxidative damage, the body responds with inflammation, which can worsen conditions like arthritis, muscle injuries, and nerve disorders.

LED light therapy has been shown to lower inflammation by reducing the production of inflammatory molecules called cytokines and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory proteins. At the same time, it improves blood flow, helping deliver more oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissues. This combination not only speeds up healing, but also reduces long-term tissue damage.

  1. Support brain health and cognitive function

When brain cells are damaged by excessive ROS, it can lead to memory problems, slower thinking, and overall cognitive decline.

Near-infrared light is capable of penetrating the skull and reaching brain cells, where it helps mitochondria work more efficiently. This reduces oxidative damage and may slow the progression of neurodegenerative conditions

Some studies also suggest that LED light therapy can stimulate the growth of new neurons and strengthen connections between brain cells, leading to better memory, focus, and overall mental clarity.

Strengthen Your Body’s Defences with LED Light Therapy

Managing oxidative stress is key to maintaining long-term health and preventing cellular damage. In addition to diet and lifestyle, LED light therapy also offers a non-invasive way to support mitochondrial health, regulate ROS, and reduce inflammation.
